CONSIDERING ALGERIA AS RI`S EXPORT TARGET, OFFICIAL

Jakarta, Oct 23 (ANTARA) - Indonesian exporters must consider developing Algeria into one of their main export destinations, Indonesian ambassador to for Algeria, Yuli Mumpuni, said here Thursday during an Indonesia-Middle East and New Zealand Business Forum with the theme "Middle East and New Zealand as Prospective Markets of Indonesian Small and Medium Entreprise Products".

The ambassador said that seeking alternative export markets such as Algeria was needed during the current global financial crisis.
Algeria is a prospective market for Indonesian products since the country is still counting on imported goods to support the life of its people" the ambassador said adding that 90 percent of Algeria's GDP came from oil and gas production which made other industries in that country lacking in growth.
The ambassador explained that products such as canned food, agricultural products, medicines, essential oils, garments, furniture, household equipment, footwear and cosmetics were among imported goods needed there.
"Imagine, with such a great opportunity, Indonesia only shares 0,61 percent of Algeria's total import rate," Yuli said.
Therefore, Yuli urged Indonesian exporters, especially the small and medium enterprises, to promote their products in Algeria. The ambassador ensured that the Indonesian embassy would facilitate the promotion of the activities of small and medium enterprises in Algeria with at least 50 percent of the Indonesian embassy's economic budget.
"My administration has conducted several road shows to introduce Indonesian products across Algeria, and we have brought together 52 Algerian entrepreneurs to Jakarta to attend the 23rd Indonesian Trade Expo held on Oct 21-25, 2008" she said.
However, Yuli also mentioned some obstacles in boosting the exports to Algeria such as the lack of information about Algeria and Indonesia's potentials, different trading systems, lack of direct flights or ships between Algeria and Indonesia, and the language problem since not much Algerians speak English.
