BOS FUNDS INSUFFICIENT TO COVER SCHOOLS` MINIMUM NEEDS

Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Oct 23 (ANTARA) - The amounts of BOS (School Operation Assistance) funds for 2008 are far from sufficient to cover the minumum education budget needs of elementary and junior high schools, an official managing BOS funds here said.

"According to our calculations, the minimum education budget needed by elementary and junior high schools is twice the amounts they have received so far," Bambang Irianto, the leader of Yogyakarta's BOS management team, said here Thursday.
The Yogyakarta education office was proposing that the amounts of BOS funds distributed to schools in 2009 be raised in line with the government's decision to increase the State Budget allocation for education to 20 percent of the budget, he said.
To date, the amount of BOS funds for elementary schools was Rp254,000 per year per student and for junior high schools Rp354,000 per year per student.
Irianto said the minimum education budget needs of elementary schools was Rp450,000 per student per year and of junior high wchools Rp600,000 per student per year.
He said he hoped that starting next year BOS funds would also be given to senior high schools, among other things, because Yogyakarta would this year initiate a 12-year compulsory but free school education pilot project.
