RI MILITARY TO CONTINUE GUARANTEEING SECURITY IN AMBALAT BLOCK

Surabaya, Indonesia, Oct 23 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) will continue to maintain and guarantee security in the Ambalat Block and its surrounding areas in the North Sulawesi Sea, a top navy officer said.

"We continue to deploy military personnel there because the region is part of our territory that needs to be safeguarded," deputy for operations to the Navy Chief of Staff, Commodore Marsetio MM said here on Thursday.
Commodore Marsetio made the remarks on the sidelines of an international seminar on "Defense Security System in an Island Country 2008" organized by the Surabaya-based Institute of Technology (ITS) at the French Cultural Center (CCCL).
Marsetio, who is also chief of the Sea Security Task Force for the Ambalat Block area, said he had often met with Malaysian ships passing through the area and asked them about their destinations.
"There were times when we found them and asked them the purpose of their presence in Ambalat," he said.
At present, there are about 12 islands in Indonesia which have border problems. In the border between Malaysia, Indonesian islands which have potential problems include Ambalat, Berhala Island and Rondo Island.
"Malaysia claims that areas 12 nautical miles around the Karang Island of Ambalat are theirs so that if it is calculated from the Sipadan and Ligitan Islands, it will reach 70 nautical miles," he added.
