OVER 4 PCT JUMP IN TOURIST ARRIVALS
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 (Bernama) -- Malaysia received 16.33 million
tourists in the first nine months of the year, representing a 4.4 per cent hike compared to the corresponding period in 2007.
Tourism Minister Azalina Othman, in announcing the figures in a
statement here Wednesday, said the top ten tourists generating markets were
Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, China (including Hong Kong and Macau),
India, Japan, Australia, the Philippines and the United Kingdom.
Singapore accounted for about 8.12 million tourists, Indonesia (1,713,778),
Thailand (1,100,507), Brunei (736, 181), China (including Hong Kong
and Macau) (728, 176), India (414, 248), Japan (319, 791), Australia (308, 015),
the Philippines (287, 559), and the United Kingdom (272,015).
However, Azalina said tourist arrivals to Malaysia for September this
year numbered 1,599,418, a 0.1 percent drop from the same month last
year.
The Tourism Minister said Singapore maintained its position as the largest
tourist generating market for Sept 2008 with about 839, 444 tourists from the
republic visiting the country.
Others in the top ten list for Sept were - Indonesia (279, 668), Thailand
(93,291), Brunei (91, 315), China (Including Hong Kong and Macau) 68,540,
Australia (37, 780), India (37, 237), Japan (35, 978), the Philippines (31, 572)
and the United Kingdom 29,100.
The minister said in terms of percentage growth, the Canadian market
performed the best with a growth of 134.4 percent followed by the Netherlands
(107.1 percent) for the first nine months of the year.
The other markets that recorded double-digit growth were Cambodia (87.6
per cent), Russia (78.2 per cent), the Philippines (48 per cent), New Zealand
(44.9 percent), Indonesia (44.7 percent), France (40.8 percent), Germany (39.5
percent), Australia (39.4 percent), the United Kingdom (34.7 percent),
Switzerland (32.2 percent), South Korea (30.6 percent), Italy (24.9 percent),
India (23.2 percent), United States (17.8 percent) and Vietnam 11.3 percent.
