FOREIGNERS NOT INTERESTED IN FISHERY INVESTMENT COOPERATION

Jakarta, Oct 22 (ANTARA) - The investment cooperation being offered by the Ministry of Maritime and Fishery Affairs (DKP) to replace cooperation in fishing in Indonesian waters does not attract foreign investors, DKP Minister Freddy Numberi said.

The minister said that countries like Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines which had been fishing in Indonesian waters preferred to maintain the fishing license form.

"We are calling on them to carry out an MoU which has been signed," the minister said on the sidelines of a get-together with national fisheries stake-holders.

The government, through the DPK has since 2005 halted cooperation in the form of fishing license for foreigners in Indonesian waters.

The minister said foreigners were reluctant to invest in the fish-processing industry in Indonesia because they were afraid it would ruin their own fish processing industries.

He said that if the Indonesian waters was open to foreigners, it would be difficult for the country to stop foreign vessels fishing in Indonesian waters.

Last month alone, the minister said that the DPK arrested at least 300 foreign vessels caught poaching in Indonesian waters.

When asked whether the government would provide incentives for foreigners in order that they would be interested in the fish-processing industry in Indonesia, the minister said that so far the government has provided subsidized-fuel oil for foreign fishing vissels with a license to fish in Indonesian waters.
