BALI COLLABORATION TO PRESENT TREES TO BABIES ON WORLD SILENT DAY
Denpasar, Indonesia, Oct 22 (ANTARA) - The Bali Collaboration for Climate Change will present white pomegranate and cashew trees to nine babies born at Denpasar's Sanglah General Hospita on World Silent Day (WSD) on Mach 21, 2009, a spokesman said.
"The trees will be given to the babies to symbolize our hope for the next generation's high commitment to the preservation of the environment," I Made Suarnatha, the Bali Collaboration for Climate Change spokesman, said here Wednesday.
He said many activities had already been carried out in preparation for the observance of WSD, including film shows and introducing the concept of silence to the world community at the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) held in Nusa Dua last December 2007.
The group had also launched a website for its campaigns, publicized climate change issues and turned off all kinds of electronic devices for four hours last March 21 as an exercise for the observance of complete silence on March 21, 2009.
Everybody is expected to participate in WSD by reducing their energy consumption and other materials to the lowest possible level.
"Keeping silent for 24 hours may be hard for people nowadays, but they can still reduce their energy consumption, such as shutting down some of their electronic devices and use a bicycle to go to work once a week," said Suaranatha.
He said everybody could choose their own ways to participate in WSD or contribute financially to the campaign in their respective regions.
March 21 was chosen as WSD to symbolize a changeover to a new life as on the date the sun would be at its vernal equinox, a point from where it would move to the nothern side of the equator.
On the next day, March 22, 2008, the campaign would focus on appreciating water on World Water Day. The target of the two events was to persuade people, especially those consuming energy and other materials excessively, to reduce greenhouse effect emission, said I Made Suaranatha
