ASIA PACIFIC METEOROLOGISTS TO ATTEND APMP-GA

Jakarta, Oct 22 (ANTARA) - Around 350 scientists, experts, and decision makers in meteorological affairs from Asia Pacific countries will attend an Asia-Pacific Meteorology Program General Assembly (APMP-GA 2008) in Jakarta from October 30 to November 8, 2008 here.

Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) chief for Meteorology, Instrumentation, and Calibration (KIM) research center, Husein Avicena said the APMP-GA 2008 was expected to attract the attention of decision makers to improve people's awareness about the importance of meteorology.
He said the importance of meteorology could be related to European Union's ban on all Indonesian flights to Europe which had created a problem to the country's aviation industry.
Husein Avicena said the condition of important components of aircraft should continue to be maintained and checked with accurate measurements in order to make them airworthy.
"To ensure an accurate measurement, an accurate measurement system with international standard is needed," Husein said, adding that the system on national scale was managed by the National Accreditation Commission (KAN) which relied on a national meteorological institution.
Husein said that with the APMP-AG 2008 , LIPI was expected to develop its competition through cooperation with national meteorological institution forum in Asia-Pacific region such as APMP which at present has 37 organizations from 26 countries.
He said the speakers at the GA-APMP were among other Indonesian Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, LIPI chairman Umar Anggara Jenie, meteorologist Prof Andrew Wallard, and Australian National Meteorlogy chief Dr Laurie Besley.
The event would be initiated with satellite meeting on October 30 - November 1 for a symposium on time measurement, pressure and meteorology in the field of chemistry.
