COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMME NEEDED

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- A comprehensive community mental health programme was needed to educate the public on mental health issues, said National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) chairman Lee Lam Thye.

Through the programme, he said, the community could play an effective
role in promoting mental health and helping the mentally-ill.

Lee said this when opening the 6th Kuala Lumpur Mental Health Conference
here Tuesday.

He said sharing existing resources among relevant government agencies,
non-governmental agencies, mental health professionals, volunteers and
commnunity leaders was necessary to address the needs of people with mental
health problems.

Lee added that funding policies and priorities should reflect the
magnitude and burden of mental disorder in daily health-care systems.
