M'SIA TO SET UP MECHANISM TO HELP EMPLOYERS AVERT RETRENCHMENT

GENTING HIGHLANDS (Malaysia), Oct 22 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian government will have in place a mechanism to help employers fend off retrenchment as a result of the current world economic crisis, said Human Resources Minister Dr S. Subramaniam.

He said the mechanism could act as an early warning system to help
employers facing difficulties avert retrenching employees.

He told this to reporters after opening Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad's
(Human Resource Development Corporation) annual conference here
Tuesday.

Dr Subramaniam said he had instructed the Labour Department to work on
the system and cooperate with companies to ensure workers were
protected.

"The Labour Department will cooperate with employers showing signs of
'closing down' to arrange for alternative jobs for employees to be retrenched,"
he said.

A total of 1,333 participants, including local university students and
professionals in the human resources field and industry are attending the
two-day conference.
