Economic Cooperation Organization’s summit starts in Baku

The summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization has today started at the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku.
The summit is attended by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as well as high-ranking representatives of the OIC member states.
The summit will discuss development of regional economic relations in transport, agriculture, energy and environment protection, as well as issues of deepening of the ECO member states' integration, sociocultural and scientific and technological development.
On the eve of the summit, Baku hosted a meeting of the ECO Council of Foreign Ministers, which discussed a meeting agenda of heads of states. Foreign ministers of the ECO member states also worked on the draft Baku Declaration, to be adopted following the summit.
The Economic Cooperation Organization is a regional intergovernmental economic body established in 1985 by the countries of Central Asia and the Middle East and is the successor of the Regional Cooperation for Development which acted on the basis of the Charter - the Izmir Treaty, signed by three founding countries - Iran, Pakistan and Turkey on March 12, 1977.
