PRESIDENT HOPES FOR INCREASED TRADE THROUGH TRADE EXPO 2008
Jakarta, Oct 21 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono hoped the 23rd Trade Expo Indonesia 2008 would increase local and international trade and economic cooperation.
"I want more people to know about Indonesia's creative economic products," the President said here Tuesday during the opening ceremony of the expo.
The Indonesian products, President Yudhoyono said, have very unique and special characteristics so that Indonesian must be confident in promoting them.
"That is why the theme of this year's Trade Expo--"What Happens to a World without Indonesia" is correct because it implies an optimistic and positive way of thinking," President said.
"It means that markets in other countries would be needing Indonesian products. In the international forum, there is a demand for the products. This is chance we must not ignore," the head of state added.
However, the financial crisis will cause a drop in demands, and Indonesia needs to make sure its products can compete with those of other countries, he added.
On this occasion the President also said Indonesia had been constantly growing in the last four years.
"In the first semester of the 2008, Indonesia's trade has reached 95.4 billion USD in exports and 89.9 US dollars in imports," the President said.
Meanwhile, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said the expo's theme was chosen to reflect the spirit of 100 years of the national awakening.
"We have to be proud of our resources, products and services in domestic as well as foreign countries," she said.
The Indonesia Trade Expo 2008 is joined by about 850 participants comprising Small-Medium Enterprises (UKM), state-owned enterprises, cooperatives, 12 regional administrations.
The expo is expected to attract seven thousand buyers.
On the occasion the head of state was accompanied by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, Transportation Minister Jusman Syafeii Djamal, Industry Minister Fahmi Idris, State Minister for Environment Rachmat Witoelar, and Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Freddy Numberi.
