DIN SYAMSUDDIN ELECTED ACRP PRESIDENT

Jakarta, Oct 21 (ANTARA) - Din Syamsuddin was elected President and moderator of the Asian Conference of Religions for Peace (ACRP) in Southeast Asia in the 7th Assembly of the organization in Manila on October 17-21, 2008.

Din Syamsuddin was the first Indonesian chosen as ACRP president since the organization was established 32 years ago.

A press release said here Tuesday that the 7th assembly of ACRP was attended by around 400 participants from 18 countries in Asia.

The organization elected six presidents representing some beliefs and countries such as China, Japan, Australia, India, the Philippines and Indonesia.

The president representing Islam in a meeting of the governing board elected Din Syamsuddin as moderator who also functions as coodinator of the presidents.

Dr Sunggon Kim, a Budhist figure from Korea was re-elected secretary general of ACRP.

In his speech, Din Syamsuddin who is the general chairman of Muhammadiyah, said that the obstacles facing the believers in the Asian region were serious, especially in anticipation of the awakening of the Asia Pacific or East Asian regions as future governing regions.

Religions should appear as a stimulating factor for progress. To that end, progressive diversity with dynamic sprituality for progress should be developed.

Therefore, religious adherents need to have an orientation to piousness and never be trapped in extreme groups - radicals and liberals.

"This is the alternative and also a solution to problems of man," he said.

The result of the assemly's declaration, ACRP had the intention to bring about peace including solving various conflicts which are still taking place in some regions of Asia like in Sri Lanka, Thailand, the Philippines and the Korean peninsula.
