Da Nang oil spill 'under control'

Da Nang (VNA) - Around 100 cu.m of oil spilled in Da Nang Bay has been
basically contained and will be transported to Khanh Son garbage dump for
treatment, according to the city's department of natural resources and
environment.

The oil spill was caused by a heavy rain-trigged landslide that smashed an
aviation company's warehouse last Thursday.

The landslide collapsed a 30m-long wall of the embankment protecting the
Central Region Aviation Fuel Company's warehouse on a hill by the sea and
cracked two container tanks open.

Local authorities and border guards have banned all fishing operations in
the offshore oil-spill area due to pollution, said Nguyen Dieu, the
department director.

After three days dealing with the problem, the remaining 3,910 cu.m of
petrol spilled off a broken container tank at the company's Lien Chieu
warehouse has been moved to another warehouse, according to the company's
director Nguyen Van Luan.

Meanwhile, half of over 2,000 cu.m of oil spilled from the other container
tank has been drained to another storage facility at Da Nang Airport ,
said Luan.

The company plans to move oil and petrol from other container tanks to
repair the embankment system, he added.-Enditem
