DPR READY TO HELP OVERCOME FERTILIZER SCARCITY IN N SULAWESI
Manado, N Sulawesi, Oct 21 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) is ready to help overcome fertilizer scarcity in North Sulawesi by lobbying the central government to increase the province's quota of subsidized fertilizer in 2009.
"A number of House Commission-IV members will bring the North Sulawesi farmers' aspiration to the central government in an effort to overcome the fertilizer scarcity," North Sulawesi councillor Djitro Tamengge said here on Tuesday.
He made the statement following a meeting with members of House Comission-IV in Jakarta on Monday (October 20).
Farmers in North Sulawesi had complained about subsidized fertilizer scarcity because of its minimum supply this year.
The fertilizer quota for North Sulawesi in 2008 was 20,077 tons of urea, 3,833 tons of SP36/Superhhos, 7,200 tons of NPK, 70 tons of Za, 1,500 tons of organic fertilizer with the upper retail price of around Rp1,000 to Rp1,800 per kilogram but they failed to meet the local farmers demand.
"We hope for additional 100 percent of fertilizer allocation for North Sulawesi in 2009, and therefore we need the district heads and mayors cooperation to convey the farmers' aspiration to the central government," Djitro said.
Meanwhile, head of local agricultural office Herry Rotinsulu said he welcomed Provincial Legislative Assembly (DPRD) efforts to lobby the House of Representatives for additional fertilizer quota next year.
