HOUSE OPPOSES INTERNATIONAL PARLIAMENTARY CAUCUS OF WEST PAPUA
Jakarta, Oct 20 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives' Comission I refused to set up a Caucus of International Parliamentarians for West Papua in London on October 15 by two British parliamentarians, Comission I chairman, Theo L. Sambuaga said in a press conference here Monday.
"The launching of the caucus which by a few parliamentarians was only a waste of energy since history has it that Papua is part of Indonesia," Marzuki Darusman, a legislator said.
The chairman also stated the caucus was not in line with the principles of international parliamentary cooperation by not intervening in the home affairs of each nation as carried by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) which opposed separatism.
"We also urge the government to be proactive in making diplomatic efforts to convince the international world that West Papua province is part of the Unitary State of the Indonesian Republic," he said.
Therefore Commission I hoped for the alertness and proactive action of all Indonesian embassies especially in Europe to disseminate objective information on Special Autonomy and the development of Papua province which was supported by the entire Papuan people.
Theo Sambuaga also said that Commission I would file a protest to the British parliament through the British embassy here as soon as possible.
International Parliementarians for West Papua is an exclusive group set up by Andrew Smith and Lord Harries, both are British MPs, one Papua New Guinean and one Vanuatu MP and pro-independence Papuan who is known as fugitive, Benny Wenda.
