FORMER COMMUNIST LEADER SHAMSIAH FAKEH DIES

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 (Bernama) -- Shamsiah Fakeh, a former leader of the
now-defunct Communist Party of Malaya, died Monday at her home in Tropicana,
Damansara here.

She was 84.

The former Angkatan Wanita Sedar (AWAS-Force of Awakened Women) leader
breathed her last at 9am, and will be buried at the Sungai Besi Muslim Cemetery
Monday.

Shamsiah, who had been staying in China, returned to Malaysia in 1994 after
the Malaysian Government signed a peace treaty with communist insurgents in
1989.

She is survived by two sons and four grandchildren.
