MALAYSIAN GOVT TACKLES BEACH EROSION
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 (Bernama) -- Efforts are being made to restore eroded
beaches in the country between five and ten years' time, said Deputy Natural
Resources and Environment Minister Senator Maznah Mazlan.
"The efforts included stacking boulders and planting mangrove trees
along
the affected beaches to prevent further destruction," she said when responding
to a supplementary question from a member of Parliament Bung Mokhtar Radin at
the Lower House of Parliament, Monday.
She said the measures would also solve estuarine sedimentation.
Bung Mokhtar asked whether the ministry had enough funds to solve beach
erosion especially at tourist destinations.
To the original question from Ab Aziz Ab Kadir, an opposition MP who wanted
to know the effectiveness of beach protection and restoration projects carried
out in Kelantan, an east coast state in Peninsular Malaysia, Maznah said:
"The measures had solved beach erosion along Pantai Dasar Sabak, Kampung
Kuala Pak Amat, Kuala Kitang, Kampung Kemeruk and Kampung Teritam
beaches."
