WIEF TO HOLD FIFTH MEETING IN JAKARTA IN MARCH 2009

Jakarta, Oct. 20 (ANTARA) - The World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) will hold its fifth meeting in Jakarta on March 2-3, 2009 with 12 heads of state or government expected to attend, a spokesman for the event's organizers said.
The 5th WIEF meeting will be officially opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Tanri Abeng, vice chairman of the WIEF organizing committee, said here on Monday.
Among the heads of state or government expected to attend the meeting were those of Kuwait, Qatar, Khazhakstan, Iran, Malaysia, Canada, and Japan, he said.
The forum would be addressed by amongst others the chief executive officers (CEOs) of five multinational companies, including General Electric, Shell and HSBC, Abeng said.
They would give their views on problems arising from the current global financial crisis, he said.
President Yudhoyono had earlier suggested that next year's WIEF should be able to attract investments worth around US$10 billion, Abeng said.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the WIEF's organizing committee, Tun Musa Hitam, said Middle Eastern countries had so far been mostly investing in the United States and Europe. But in light of the current global economic turmoil, Muslim-populated countries should now be able to absorb Middle Eastern countries' investments, he said.
The Forum was also expected to help member countries anticipate the impact of the global crisis, said the former deputy prime minister of Malaysia.
