RI IMMIGRATION DETAINS 16 AFRICANS LACKING STAY PERMITS
Tangerang, Banten Province, Oct. 20 (ANTARA) - The Tangerang Immigration Office here on Monday arrested 16 Africans for staying illegally in Indonesia.
"The Africans have been detained because most of them did not have have a stay permit," Pondang Tambunan, head of the Tangerang Immigration office, said here on Monday.
The Africans consisted of seven nationals of Liberia, four of Cameroon, five of Nigeria and one of Guinea, Tambunan said.
They were arrested in a raid conducted by immigration officers on a housing complex in Lippo Karawaci, Tangerang.
He said initially the raid had targeted 23 foreigners but six of them were able to show stay permits and one escaped.
The 16 Africans had violated Article 52 of Indonesia's Law No. 9/1992 on Immigration as they did not have passports nor permits to stay in Indonesia.
They would be deported to their respective countries after being assisted to obtain passports, he said.
The Africans had claimed they had been recruited by an agent as football players, he said.
However, they failed to show any stay permit or letter of recommendation from the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), to immigration officials, he said.
