Mottaki: US-Iraq security pact should not ignore people views

Tehran, Oct 20, IRNA Former Iraqi prime minister Ibrahim Jaafari conferred on Sunday with
Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on regional developments.

At the meeting, Mottaki said that ties between the two countries are
growing and this is due to the firm determination of officials from
both sides.

Expansion of ties between Iran and Iraq, in view of their historical
and cultural commonalties, is regarded as a strong support for this,
he added.

Referring to the negative and outdated efforts of the US in Iraq and
Afghanistan, he said that fundamental changes in US foreign policy are
unavoidable.

He called the US move to sign security agreement with Iraq as futile
adding that the Iraqi people have voiced their strong opposition to
this in recent demonstrations and ignoring the people's view would
result in another failure for them.

Jaafari, for his part, said that the Islamic Republic of Iran has a
significant status in global public opinion and the country's
relations with Iraq is based on cultural, geographical, historical and
social commonalties.
