RI, NETHERLANDS INTENSIFY COOPERATION IN DEFENSE INDUSTRY

Jakarta, Oct 19 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and the Netherlands agreed to intensify cooperation on the defense industry especially in building corvettes.

That was one of the results of Indonesian Defence Forces (TNI) Commander General Djoko Santoso's visit along with Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Tedjo Edhy Purdijanto to the Netherlands on October 18 and 19, 2008.
Navy spokesman Rear Admiral Iskandar Sitompul, who also joined the visit said here Sunday that they made a courtesy call on Dutch defense minister, represented by J.G. de Vries.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed defense and military cooperation which have been running well not only the training of officers of the two countries' armed forces but also cooperation in the defense industry.
"Cooperation in the defense industry especilly in corvettes was more focused on technological skills of the naval personnel," Iskandar said.
The visit was also marked by the handing over of a corvette from Schelde Naval Shipbuilding yard in Vlissingen in the Netherlands to the Indonesia side.
"Dubbed KRI Iskandar Muda, the new warship is scheduled to arrive in Indonesia on December 2, 2008 and will also join the commemoration of the Indonesian Navy's anniversary on December 5, 2008," he said.
