SBY`S CANDIDACY FOR 2009 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS NOT YET SOLID

Jakarta, Oct 19 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's candidacy for the 2009 presidential elections was not yet solid as it still depended on his performance in the field of economy, Saiful Mujani, the chief of the Indonesia Survey Institute (LSI), said here on Sunday.

He said the public mostly considered political and security condition as well as law enforcement under SBY better than in the previous administrations.
However these factors were not yet sufficient to shore up his position if the national economic condition got worse.
"The national economic condition next year is still uncertain and therefore SBY's reelection prospect is also still uncertain," he said.
He said the economic factor would be significant in connection with the public's view on SBY.
Compared to his rivals such as former president Megawati, current vice president Jusuf Kalla, former miliatry leaders such as Wiranto and Prabowo and also Sultan Hamengkubuwono X of Yogyakarta SBY's superiority still remained unbeaten.
"There has not yet been an alternative candidate with strong popularity and low resistence," he said.
He said support to SBY would be determined by the public's approval rating to his performance.
He said SBY's position would be safe if the public's approval rating to his performance was above 60 percent. "Now his rating is 56 percent," he said.
Mujani said some external factors could still affect SBY's popularity like what had happened to Megawati's that dropped after the bomb explosion at the Marriott Hotel ahead of the last general elections.
