PRESIDENT YUDHOYONO`S PUBLIC APPROVAL RATINGS RISE AGAIN

Jakarta, Oct 19 (ANTARA) - Public approval ratings on President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's performance rose significantly, after an earlier survey showed a decline as the result of his decision to raise fuel oil prices.

The executive director of the Indonesia Survey Institute (LSI), Syaiful Mujani, said here on Sunday that in the past four years of his administration President Yudhoyono's public approval ratings were fluctuating and declining.
"The steepest decline was recorded in June 2008 when his public approval ratings were below 50 percent namely only 45 percent," he said.
In September 2008 however they rose again to 56 percent, he said.
He said the drop in the public approval ratings followed his decision to raise the price of fuel oils. The public again gave a positive response three months after the decision was made following the government's decision to give the people compensations for the fuel price hike.
The policy drew a positive response from the people as shown by the results of the survey done afterwards which showed higher public approval ratings.
Mujani said he predicted Yudhoyono's approval ratings would remain relatively good until December this year.
"Possibly they would drop from January to June 2009 because of the current global financial crisis," he said.
He said if the effect of the crisis could not be neutralized it was not impossible Yudhoyono's ratings would drop again.
He said Yudhoyono's approval ratings were parallel with his support ratings because according to LSI's survey approval ratings are correlated with support ratings.
So, if President Yudhoyono's ratings rose it means that his support also rose, he said.
In response to a question on the results of the LSI survay presidential spokesman Andi Mallarangeng said he appreciated them. "We remain optimistic towards 2009. The President will also remain focussed on carrying out his administrative duties," he said.
On a question about the current global crisis Andi said that the government had already prepared a policy package to overcome its impact on the country.
