PRESIDENT HOPES ABG 2008 TO ENHANCE RI'S IMAGE IN WORLD

Jimbaran, Bali, Oct 18 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono hopes the first ever Asian Beach Games (ABG) held in Bali from 0ctober 18 to 26 will further raise Indonesia's and Bali's image in the world.

"The president wishes this event to be a success to show to the world that Indonesia is still strong despite the impact of the global financial crisis," the president's spokesperson, Dino Patti Djalal, said here Saturday after Yudhoyono's meeting with the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Jacques Rogge, and the president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al Shabbah.

The meeting took place in the Ganesha Room of the Four Season resort in Jimbaran where the president is staying during his two-day visit in Bali.

At the meeting, Dino said, the president thanked the IOC and OCA for selecting Bali as host of the first ABG.

"This is an historical moment because ABG is a new sporting event which is expected to develop further in the future," Dino said.

The president also expressed appreciation for the presence of the ABG's 3,000 participants from 45 Asian countries in Bali despite the ongoing global financial crisis.

The president hoped the ABG would continue to develop in line with Asia's rising achievements in the field of sports.

On the occasion, the president was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburixal Bakrie who is also chairman of the ABG's steering committee , Youth and Sports Affairs Minister Adhyaksa Dault and chairperson of the National Sports Council (KONI) Rita Subowo.

Meanwhile, the president was scheduled to officially open the ABG in the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Statue compound in Nusa Dua at 08.00 pm. The opening ceremony would also be attended by the heads of state or government of 11 Asian countries.
