PONTIANAK HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN SEMINAR ON REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

Pontianak, W Kalimantan, Oct 18 (ANTARA) - Hundreds of students from 50 high schools in the West Kalimantan city of Pontianak participated in a seminar on teenage reproductive health organized by the regional branch of Merah Putih Youth (TMP) here on Saturday.

"We organize the seminar for high school students here because of our concern about the consequences of promiscuity for their reproductive health which can lead to disharmonious marriages later," TMP spokesperson Karolin Margret Natasa said.

She said besides premarital sex, many underage students were involved in drug abuse which made them susceptible to HIV/AIDS infection.

"Seeing these alarming conditions for our next generations, we feel called upon to do something toward improvement through this seminar in an effort to alert them to the dangers of drugs and free sex," she said.

She expressed hope that the government and related institutions could pay more attention to present-day teenagers as future leaders of the nation.

She said TMP was an organization of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) whose members were high school and university students.

Meanwhile, Nur Suci Astuti, a participant of the seminar, said she was glad to gave the opportunity because she gained a lot of knowledge about reproductive health at the seminar.

"I have heard that drug abuse and premarital sex are forbidden by religion but after participating in the seminar I know more about their dangers," Nur Suci said.
