Aso, Rudd vow to strengthen Japan-Australia ties on financial crisis

TOKYO, Oct. 18 Kyodo - Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso and his Australian counterpart Kevin Rudd
pledged Saturday to step up bilateral cooperation in dealing with the global
financial turmoil, Japanese officials said.
The two leaders made the pledge during a 30-minute telephone conversation, the
officials said.
Rudd said talks involving the Group of 20 financial chiefs and central bankers
would provide the most appropriate venue to address a future global economic
structure, the officials said. The G-20 comprises major industrialized
countries and emerging economies that account for 85 percent of the global
economy.
Aso said such a framework should be a matter for future debate and that Japan
is prepared to host a meeting of world leaders on the global financial crisis.
