GERMANY COMMITTED TO HELPING RI IN IMPROVING PORT MANAGEMENT

Bogor, Oct 17 (ANTARA) - The German government was committed to helping Indonesia improve port management through training of port authority officials in the next three years.
In this context, the German government through "InWent Capacity Building International" teamed up with the center for assessment of coastal and marine resources (PKSPL) and the community research and empowerment institute (LPPM) of the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB).
"We have been cooperating with Germany since 2000 and in the begining in the field of science focusing on coastal area management and developed into multi-sectors including port construction," PKSPL Chairman of the Bogor Agricultural Institute Dr Tridoyo Kusumastanto said here on Friday.
On the sidelines of the conclusion of the training attended by offocials of the communications ministry, the national development planning board, provincial/district administrations, state port management companies, private and local ports and private/industrial supporting companies, he said that what had been done through cooperation was only a new era for a certain purpose to boost the quality of port management.
Asked about the management of ports in Indonesia compared to those in Europe, he said that the ports in Europe was no comparison for us.
"We compared our ports with those in Singapore or Malaysia, Indonesia is still lagging behind. Hence, Indonesia needs better skills in management by adopting international standards including those of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)," he said.
