PRESIDENT OFF TO BALI TO OPEN FIRST ASIAN BEACH GAMES
Jakarta, Oct. 18 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Saturday morning left here for Bali to officially open the First Asian Beach Games (ABG) later in the day.
The head of state was accompanied by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie, Minister/Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi, and Communication and Informatics Minister M Nuh.
Upon his arrival in Bali, Yudhoyono was to receive the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Jacques Rogge, and the president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), Sheikh Al-Fahad Al Shabbah.
At the meeting with the Olympic officials, the president would be accompanied by Coordnating Minister Aburizal Bakrie who is also chairman of the ABG Steering Committee, Sudi Silalahi, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Adhyaksa Dault and the chairperson of the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI), Rita Subowo.
At 8 p.m. local time, the President would officially kick off the Asian Beach Games at a ceremony expected to be attended by 11 Asian heads of state or government.
The opening would be highlighted by, among other things, a welcome dance performed by 100 traditional dancers, and the rendition of the song "To be One" by three Asian singers - Andre Hehanusa of Indonesia, Christian Bautista of the Philippines and Mark Lazzaro of India.
To run until Oct 26, the Asian Beach Games is participated in by around 10,000 athletes from 45 countries including China, Japan, Afghanistan, Laos and Macau.
The competitions would be in 17 beach sport branches such as beach volleyball, dragon boat racing, body building, beach soccer, beach handball, beach pencaksilat (traditional martial art), beach wrestling, jet-skiing, marathon swimming, para-gliding, sailing, triathlon, windsurfing, woodball and sepaktakraw.
