OPPOSITION SHOULD COOPERATE WITH GOVERNMENT IN FACING ECONOMIC CRISIS - DPM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 (Bernama) -- The opposition should co-operate with the government in developing a common ground in facing the global financial crisis, said Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

He said perhaps the cooperation could be one positive result to arise in
the face of the global economic crisis and a struggling economy.

"However, Malaysia has become increasingly torn by the very thing that
provided our independence and sustains our strength...our diversity," he said in
his speech at the Regional Eisenhower Fellowship Conference here Friday
night.

Najib said much like the global community, increasing political and
economic pressures and occasional self interest had driven some people away
from the pursuit of mutual understanding and instead, towards exploiting
society's differences for personal and political gain.

Moreover, he said, the government system and anyone who served in it had
come under suspicion and criticism, sometimes of the most offensive
sort.

He said traditional media continued to perform its usual function but the
people were increasingly voting with their feet and moving towards valuable,
vital, and robust online discourse although he at times felt exasperated by the
half truths and outright lies that masquerade as the gospel truth on the
Internet.

"Therefore, we have a national security mechanism to protect the nation in
times of crisis, namely the International Security Act, but of late, some feel
the law has been applied erratically and sometimes erroneously," he said, adding
that Malaysia was long overdue for a comprehensive look at judicial and social
reform and corruption enforcement.

Najib said one result of these ongoing challenges was a frustrated
electorate that had perhaps matured at a faster pace than its
government.

"However, we are fortunate that the electorate remains willing, within
limits, to provide the government the time to catch up," he said.

Participants from over 20 countries attended the conference.
