INDIAN ENVOY MEETS YOGYAKARTA VICE GOVERNOR

Yogyakarta, Oct 17 (ANTARA) - Indian ambassador to Indonesia Biren Nanda met with Yogyakarta Vice Governor Paku Alam IX at the the latter's office here on Friday to introduce himself.
The Indian envoy said after the meeting it was his first encounter with Paku Alam since his posting in Indonesia six months ago.
Biren Nanda said his visit to Yogyakarta was also to attend a workshop on cultural relations between Indonesia and India on Thursday, October 16.
According to him, the workshop was an important event to discuss the continuation of cultural relations between his country and Indonesia, especially Yogyakarta.
He said, in the past, India and Yogyakarta had historical and tourism promotion relations.
Yogyakarta, according to the Indian envoy, was an important city in Indonesia because it was the heart of Java island and rich in culture and arts.
Therefore, he said, the cooperation between India and Yogyakarta would continue to be stepped up, partcularly through the Jawaharlal Nehru Indian Cultural Center (JNICC) and Yogyakarta's University of Gajah Mada (UGM).
Biren Nanda said JNICC had many dance and yoga experts , and they could share their skills with other people through good cooperation.
Meanwhile, Yogyakarta Vice Governor Paku Alam IX said relations between India and Indonesia, especially with Yogyakarta, were expected to get stronger through a possible sister-city or sister- province cooperation scheme.
During his visit to Yogyakarta, the Indian ambassador was accompanied by JNICC director MK Singh, Indian Embassy secretary for information and political affairs Gugandh Rajaram.
