MINISTER: N. JAKARTA COAST MAY BE FLOODED IN 2050
Jakarta, Oct 16 (ANTARA) - Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Freddy Numberi at a hearing with Commission VII of the House of Representatives on Thursday predicted that the North Jakarta coastal regions near the Muara Baru fish port migt be flooded in 2050.
He made the warning in connection with the impact of the flooding which had cased 25 of a total of 129 companies to be relocated from Muara Baru as the result of the elimination of mangrove forests.
In 1970 the mangrove forests in Muara Angke covered 1,000 hectares, but since the boom of the property business, the mangrove forests had been reduced to 200 hectares.
"At present, only 25 hectares of the mangrove forests are now left and in poor condition filled with garbage," he said.
In response to his statement a legislator, Mahadi Sinambela, said that it would need a more comprehensive study to revise the city plan.
Fauzi Bowo, the Jakarta Governor, agreed to the review and revise the city plan.
In the hearing with the House Comission VII, the heads of three provinces-- Jakarta, Banten and West Java-- along with Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Freddy Numberi, Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto, Environment Ministry Deputy for Natural Resources Conservation and Environmental Damage Control Masnellyarti Hilman, submitted action plans and offereed cooperation to anticipate floods in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jabodetabek).
