PRESIDENT CALLS ON RIAU PEOPLE NOT TO PANIC OVER GLOBAL CRISIS

Pekanbaru, Oct 16 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked the people of Riau province not to panic in the face of the ongoing global financial crisis, Riau Governor Wan Abubakar said.

"The president made the call at a meeting with provincial governors and businessmen in Jakarta on Wednesday to discuss the current economic situation in the country," the governor said here on Thursday.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono Wednesday called on all regional leaders to participate in efforts to overcome the impact of the current global financial crisis by among other things boosting local economic growth.

"Regional chiefs are called upon to focus on efforts to increase economic growth, keep inflation at a normal level, reduce poverty and unemployment," Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said after a cabinet meeting chaired by the president here on Wednesday.

The meeting was also attended by Vice President Jusuf Kalla, all cabinet ministers, heads of state institutions, provincial governors, national and local chairpersons of the Indonesian chamber of commerce and industry (Kadin), bankers and a number of businessmen.

According to the Riau governor, the president had also asked all sides to face the crisis with a clear mind and a rational attitude.

During the meeting, according to Governor Wan Abubakar, the president called on all governors to continue paying attention to the people's needs, particularly their need for rice.

At the same time, the president called on the people of Riau province to remain alert in the face of the global economic crisis.
