EDUCATION MINISTER JOINS POTATO HARVEST IN MAGELANG
Magelang, C Java, Oct 16 (ANTARA) - National Education Minister Bambang Sudibyo took part in a maiden potato harvest on a slope of Mount Merbabu in Magelang district, Central Java, conducted by students of the Ngablak State Vocational School (SMKN)-1.
"The maiden potato harvest indicates that this SMKN has been seriously preparing its students either to find jobs or to create jobs as well as to continue their studies," the minister said here on Thursday.
In addition, the SMKN also played a role as an education center for building a school of life, especially life in the surrounding society, he said.
The Ngablak SMKN-1 is located on a slope of Mount Merbabu where most people work as food crop farmers. The area supplies food farming products to several big cities in Java and outside Java.
"This SMKN has turned out to be an example of conducting community building," the minister said.
Potato cultivation in this area started on July 15, 2008 on 1,000 square meters of land and was expected to yield 15 tons of potato per hectare.
SMKN-1 currently had 320 students and 47 teachers, the school master Siti Jariyah said.
