Don't give in to international pressure on LTTE: NFF to Prez
T V Sriram
Colombo, Oct 15 (PTI) National Freedom Front (N.F.F.) which supports the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (U.P.F.A.) coalition led by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has asked the government not to come under international pressure, including that from India, to rethink on operations against L.T.T.E.
Leader of the NFF Wimal Weerawansa said the government
should not give in to pressure mounted by the international
powers including India but continue the ongoing military
operations to crush the L.T.T.E.
Speaking in Sinhala, Weerawansa told a packed news
conference here Tuesday that India has already requested Sri
Lanka to go for a political solution but the government should
not stop the military operations to defeat the Tigers at any
cost.
"This is the last chance any government would get to
finish off the L.T.T.E. and that opportunity should not be
wasted," Weerawansa said.
The breakaway group of ten Jana Vimukti Parishad
(J.V.P.) parliamentarians led by Wimal Weerawansa formed a new
political party and began functioning from May 14, 2008.
Weerawansa said the government must decide whether it
should give in to international pressure or respect the
mandate it has got to defeat terrorism.
"Definitely the government can not and should not
neglect the mandate it has got to defeat terrorism. If it
does, the government will have to face a struggle by the
people from whom it has got the mandate to defeat the
L.T.T.E.," he told reporters.
He said both Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe
and Former President Chandrika Kumaratunge tasted defeats
because they worked against the people's mandate when trying
to resolve the national issue.
Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror reported that The N.F.F.
Leader during the press conference also explained that the
situation is complex Wednesday with South Indian Tamil parties
pressurising New Delhi which in turn pressurising the Sri
Lankan government.
Weerawansa at the same time said India on the other
hand wants L.T.T.E. defeated, the newspaper said.
"This is why it has provided radar equipment to Sri
Lanka Air Force," he said.
He said the Sri Lankan government should understand
that Indian government may be applying some pressure on Sri
Lanka just to satisfy its allies, the newspaper reported. PTI
