KPK NABS FORMER IMMIGRATION CHIEF OF RI CONSULATE IN KUCHING

Jakarta, Oct 15 (ANTARA) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Wednesday arrested Ayi Nugraha, former chief of the immigration sub-directorate of the Indonesian consulate general in Kuching for alleged involvement in a corruption case.

When he was leaving the KPK building after an intensive interrogation, Ayi was reluctant to give any comment or information to journalists. He immediately got into a prison van.

Ayi's lawyer, Posma Rajagukguk, denied that his client had imposed illegal levies on people applying for immigration documents. The levies for the issuance of documents was based on a decision of the Indonesian ambassador in Malaysia.
"If it is a kind of illegal levy, there is a legal basis for him to do," Posma said.
In this case, former Indonesian ambassador to Malaysia Rusdiharjo had been sentenced to 1.5 years in prison by the high court.
Earlier, KPK detained former Indonesian consul general in Kinabalu, Malaysia, Arifin Hamzah.
Arifin was alleged to have committed a crime by imposing double tariff on applicants for immigration documents in Malaysia from 1999 to 2005.
In this case, KPK had named other suspects . They are two former Indonesian consuls general in Kinabalu whose initials are KT and MS, followed by MTM and RE, the two chiefs for economic, information, social and cultural affairs at the Indonesian consulate general office in Kinabalu.
KPK also named other three chiefs of immigration sub-directorate of Indonesian consulate general office in Tawau whose initials are AN, KS, MT as suspects.
In addition, a liaison officer of the Indonesian consulate general office in Kuching with initial of YR has been named as a suspect.
All suspects were alleged to have enriched themselves or other persons by imposing double tariff in the application of immigration document in Malaysia.
Accordingly, the tariff should be posted as non tax income. Because of this practice, the state was predicted to have suffered a loss of about Rp11.7 million.
