UREA FERTILIZER HARD TO FIND IN BANYUMAS

Banyumas, Indonesia, Oct 15 (ANTARA) - Farmers in Banyumas district, Central Java, are having difficulty finding urea fertilizer for the 2008-2009 planting season.

"I have come to fertilizer kiosks in Cilongok, Ajibarang, and Purwokerto but none of them had urea fertilizer in stock," Puji, a farmer from Penusupan village in Cilongok sub district, Banyumas, said here on Wednesday.

Sarna, another farmer from Ajibarang Wetan village said he had searched for the fertilizer in Rawalo because it was not available in kiosks in Ajibarang, Karanglewas, and Purwokerto but in vain.
According to Sarna, the urea fertilizer price in Rawalo was Rp90,000 per 50-kilogram bag, or the retail price of around Rp1,800 to Rp1,900 per kilogram, while in fact the retail price set by the government was Rp60,000 per 50-kg bag or Rp1,200 per kilogram.
Meanwhile, Jito, an urea fertilizer retailer at Ajibarang market said a lot of farmers needed it but it was difficult to find.
He said it was difficult for him to have fertilizer supply and even he had it, it was immediately out of sale although a farmer could buy only five kilograms.
But based on an observation at fertilizer company PT Pusri warehouse in Banyumas and Purwokerto, there was urea fertilizer stock pile in the warehouse although the farmers disparately needed it.
PT Pusri marketing director Iing Hasanuddin admitted that there was a stock pile but it distribution to the farmers should refer to the quota which has been set by Central Java governor.
He said the farmers in Banyumas neede 1,135 tons of fertilizer in October this year but only 515 tons of which had been distributed.
According to him, fertilizer allotment at the end of this year could reach 4,600 tons but it remained insufficient to meet the farmers demand.
Therefore, he said, the Banyumas district administration had asked for an additional quota of 2,500 tons from the Central Java provincial administration.
Howerver, there was so far no response from the Central Java ptovincial administration.
