RI TO INSTALL US-MADE RADAR IN TARAKAN

Jakarta, Oct 15 (ANTARA) - Indonesia will soon install a radar provided by the United States in Tarakan, East Kalimantan, in an effort to maintain security in the Indonesian Inlands Waterway (ALKI) II in Sulawesi seas, Navy Chief Admiral Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno said here on Wednesday.

Besides, the Navy chief said his side was also conducting surveys to find proper places for the installation of eight US-made radars in the Makassar Strait.
"The results of the survey will later be subject to consultation with the United States. The United States usually just accepts the results of our surveys," the Navy chief said.
He said that there had been several locations which were considered strategic where surveys had been undertaken by the Navy.
Admiral Purdijatno said that the navy had focussed on Tarakan as one of the strategic place for the U.S-made radars, because it bordered directly with the Malaysian eastern state of Sabah in the north.
The Indonesian government has agreed to the installation of eight US-made radars in the Makassar strait and the Sulawesi seas in an effort to support security maintenance in the ALKI II areas.
The development of the U.S.-made radars also aimed to maintain the ASEAN-maritime security.
