Qatar: Efforts to Eliminate Terrorism Are Not Enough
New York, June 29 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has underlined that the spared international, regional and national efforts to eliminate the phenomenon of terrorism and its causes are not enough.
Qatar also stressed it has given great attention to all efforts by United Nations to eradicate terrorism.
"Stemming from the belief of the state of Qatar in the dangers of terrorism on all levels, the State of Qatar has given great attention to all efforts by United Nations to eradicate terrorism," Ibrahim Moussa Al Hatmi, member of the National Anti-terrorism Committee, told the General Assembly of the United Nations Global Counter-terrorism Strategy.
"Since the United Nations adopted the Global Counter - terrorism Strategy in 2006 and in the spite of the international regional and national efforts to eliminate the phenomenon of terrorism the threat of terrorism is still looming, especially during the past years. However, these efforts are not enough to eradicate terrorism as well as its causes, due to the existence of many international conflicts that fuel and spread terrorism."
In order to achieve those goals, Al Hatmi said Qatar sought the adoption and implementation of the United Nations Global Counter - terrorism Strategy.
Regarding the first pillar, the State of Qatar, he said, has adopted an open cultural and educational policy based on dialogue with the other Qatar has also organized and hosted numerous conventions and meetings on Interfaith Dialogue and the Alliance of Civilizations and established the Doha Center for Interfaith Dialogue in 2007, as well as The National Committee for the Alliance of Civilization in 2010.
Regarding the second pillar, within the framework of preventing and combating terrorism, the State of Qatar has issued a number of legislations that criminalize terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including.
Law number (3) in 2004 on combating terrorism
Law number (4) in 2010 on Money laundering and financing of terrorism.
Regarding the third pillar on capacity building, in cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the State of Qatar has organized many workshops on combating terrorism.
Regarding the fourth pillar, the State of Qatar confirms its leadership in the field of human rights and fundamental freedoms. In this regard, its constitution, as well as its legislations ensured human rights. The State of Qatar has also joined all international conventions of human rights.
"We hope that our deliberations on the United Nations Global Counter - terrorism Strategy will result in talking the most effective measures to guarantee the success of this strategy in achieving its goals in the context of the objectives of the United Nations to combat terrorism."
Concluding his speech, Al Hatmi extended his deep gratitude and appreciation to the organizers of this meeting and to all those who participated in its preparations, hoping that the meeting will be successful. (QNA)
