METHANE GAS PRODUCTION IN MALANG REACHES 118 MILLION CUBIC METERS

Malang, E Java, Oct 14 (ANTARA) - The potential methane gas managed by the Supiturang dumping facility, Malang, East Java, reached an average of 118.3 million m3 per year.

According to a Malang Muhammadiyah University (Unmuh) researcher, Prof. Dr. Laode M. Kamaluddin, the methane gas produced by garbage at Supiturang facility has attracted the Dutch government for cooperate in managing it with the Malang city administration.

"In the early stage the Dutch would build a laboratory in the facility with a grant, and the first rock placement of the lab would be conducted on November 7," he said after meeting Malang Mayor, Peni Suparto, at city hall.

He said the building of a methane gas laboratory on the site which would be attended by the Dutch ambassador for Indonesia, is scheduled for completion at the end of December 2008, so the facility would be operating as of January 2009.

Prof. Laode who also act on behalf of the Malang city administration, and the Dutch official said that the 118.3 million m3 methane gas would only use about 5 of the 12 hectares of the facility's area.

Besides producing methane gas, an average of 5.6 million Kwh per year worth more than Rp2.3 billion can be produced from the garbage, based on the result of their research two years ago.

Meanwhile the assurance of the methane gas commercial area building deal from Malang city administration, even though the MoU was signed on September 16, 2008.***2***
