HIGHER PUBLIC PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE CHIEF SUSPENDED OVER EXTORTION CASE

Jakarta, Oct 15 (ANTARA) - The attorney general has officially relieved Ratmadi Saptondo of his position as head of the Tilamuta higher public prosecutor's office in Boalemo, Gorontalo province, for alleged implication in an extortion case.

"I have signed a letter on him on Tuesday. I have relieved him of his post as head of the Tilamuta higher public prosecutor's office," Attorney General Hendarman Supandji said here on Tuesday.

He said he had asked the internal affairs unit at his office to investigate Saptondo.

"The maximum punishment is dismissal as a public prospector but whether Saptondo will be fired depends on the results of the investigation," the attorney general said.

It was reported earlier the Saptondo case came to the surface following the circulation of a recorded telephone conversation between Saptondo and Subhan Umar, a member of the auction committee of the Boalema regional government.

In the conversation, Saptondo expressed discontent toward Boalemo district head Iwan Boking and a number of other regional administration officials about a sum of money he had received.

Saptondo also appeared disappointed because Handoyo -- who was believed to be the region's public works service chief -- had given him (Saptondo) a sum of money that was less than Rp50 million.

The suspended public prosecutor's office chief in the telephone conversation also threatened to arrest the heads of a number of services in the regional government for involvement in corruption cases.
