NGOs URGE GOVT TO STOP DEPENDING ON WORLD BANK

Jakarta, Oct. 14 (ANTARA) - A number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in a demonstration outside the Indonesian bourse here Tuesday urged the government to stop depending on the World Bank.
The NGOs included the Coalition against Debt (KAU), the Indonesian Environmental Forum (Walhi), the Indonesian Farmers Union (SPI), and Indonesian Solidarity.

"Now is the right moment for the government not to be trapped in the World Bank's financial scheme plan which can in fact lead Indonesia to become indebted again ," KAU Chairman Dani Setiawan said at the rally.

The policies of the World Bank had caused liberalization in the banking sector and produced programs which had caused people to become poor such as its schemes to eliminate government subsidies.

KAU also urged the government to lower the prices of goods by first reducing the prices of fuel.

"By cutting the fuel prices, the prices of other goods will automatically drop also," he said.

He also asked the government to renegotiate its foreign debts in order to make the state budget more efficient for small- and medium-scale businesses.

Dani Setiawan criticized the government for giving priority to the corporate and banking sectors in dealing with the global financial crisis.

The rally of around 40 people was tightly guarded by tens of security officers.
