PRESIDENT: MILITARY POWER STILL RELEVANT TO SOLVE CONFLICTS
Surabaya, Oct 14 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the use of military power was still relevant to solve various conflicts in other parts of the world.
In his address at the peak event to observe the 63rd anniversary of the National Defense Forces (TNI) at Dermaga Ujung Naval Base here on Tuesday, Yudhoyono said although the cold war was over, the challenge faced by the TNI in the 21st century was even heavier following the dramatic changes in the constellation of the strategic environment.
"The end of cold war does not immediately create a peaceful world, because in reality various conflicts continue to happen in other parts of the world. Therefore, the use of military power remains part of the solution to those conflicts," Yudhoyono said.
The head of state said an indication that military power was still relevant was the fact that a number of countries were continuing to increase their military budget to strengthen their armament systems, even to make weapons of mass destruction.
"Although many of the world's problems can be solved through political diplomacy, the military approach is frequently needed and we can see it in international conflicts in other parts of the world," the president said.
He said there were alarming signs of the emergence of new tensions in international relations such as those existing during the cold war.
"Therefore, the world community should work together to prevent it from occurring," Yudhoyono said.
The president said Indonesia, as a big country with a strategic position, needed a strong defense system which supported by strong and professional soldiers.
On the occasion the head of state instructed Defense Ministry and TNI personnel to create an adequate national defense system by keeping abreast of world developments and various issues with the potential to trigger conflict in the 21st century.
