MELAMINE-CONTOMINATED MILK FROM CHINA TO BE DESTROYED NEXT WEEK

Denpasar, Bali, Oct 14 (ANTARA) - Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said melamine-contaminated milk products imported from China and withdrawn from the domestic markets recently would be destroyed next week.

"We are ready to destroy them. It will be done after my return (in Jakarta) so possibly it will happen next week," the minister said here on Tuesday.

The minister was in Bali to attend a function marking the corner-stone laying of an integrated cardiac service center at the Sanglah General hospital here.

Previously, the head of the Food and Drug Supervision Agency (BPOM), Husniah Rubiana Thamrin Akib, had said the melamine-contaminated milk products imported from China were now kept in the supervision units of the BPOM's regional offices.

She said the destruction of the contaminated products would be carried out simultaneously in various regions throughout the country.

"The total volume of the confiscated products is not known yet because we are still conducting examinations and confiscation as it has turned out that there are distributors who are still keeping the goods," she added.

She said it was previously planned to destroy the Chinese products on October 17 but the health minister still had to conduct a working visit first so that the plan was postponed.
