MANPOWER MINISTER OPENS ASEM LEMC-II IN BALI
Nusa Dua, Bali, Oct 14 (ANTARA) - Manpower and Transmigration Minister Erman Suparno officially opened the second Asia Europe Meeting - Labor and Employment Ministers' Conference (ASEM LEMC-II) at Bali International Convention Center (BICC) in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Tuesday.
Themed "More and Better Jobs-Strengthening Partnership to Take Advantage from Global Labor Market Towards Decent Work", the meeting was attended by 18 manpower ministers, nine ambassadors, and a number of senior officials in manpower affairs.
After Erman Suparno delivered his address, it was followed by speeches from the keynote speakers, namely French ambassador for promoting social cohesion Gilles de Robien, Brunei Darussalam Home Affairs Minister Pehin Dato Adanan Yusof, Vladimir Spidla of European Union commission for manpower and social affairs, Chinese mineral resources vice minister for social security Hu Xiaoyi, and German Bundesministerium for Arbeit and Sozialest Susanne Hoffmann.
The speakers shed the light on a number of problems among others, environmentally-friendly job opportunities, migrant labor, social security, training for migrant workers, information access, creation of job opportunities, abolition of forced labor, child labor, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and a number of related issues.
Asked why the global financial crisis was not mentioned in the meeting's agenda, Erman Suparno said it was because not all countries were experiencing its impact.
The ASEN LEMC-II was a follow up to ASEM LEMC-I on globalizatin in Potsdam, Germany, as the first step to prepare ASEM LEMC-II.
Indonesia conducted a preparatory meeting for ASEMLEMC-II on September 12-13, 2007 in Yogyakarta and a symposium on preparations for ASEM-2 manpower ministerial meeting in Bandung, West Java, on April 10-11, 2008.
The preparatory meetings yielded a number of substantial recommendations for the process of ASEAM LEMC-II which was attended by 37 ASEM partners (19 from European Union + European Commission, and 14 from Asian countries), and officials from International Labor Organization (ILO), World Bank, International Organization for Migration (IOM), and Jakarta representative Asia Development Bank (ADB).
The objective of ASEM LEMC-II meeting was to strengthen joint position between two regions in the field of manpower affairs by tightening relation and cooperation among developing countries.
