(LEAD) Seoul shares soar 6.14 pct on U.S. rally
SEOUL -- South Korean stocks jumped more than 6 percent Tuesday as investor
sentiment was buoyed by overnight rallies in the U.S. and optimism that global
efforts to tackle financial turmoil will soon pay off, analysts said. The local
currency rose against the U.S. dollar.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) gained 79.16 points, or
6.14 percent, to 1,367.69. Volume was heavy at 451.85 million shares worth 6.85
trillion won (US$5.71 billion), with winners outpacing losers 797 to 68.

(LEAD) S. Korean currency jumps against U.S. dollar on global efforts
SEOUL -- South Korea's currency jumped against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday due to
growing hopes that global financial instability may ease amid stepped-up
international efforts to avoid a crisis, analysts said.
The local currency closed at 1,208 won to the dollar, up 30 won from Monday's
close, marking the fourth straight day of gains.
The currency has gained 187 won against the greenback over the last four
sessions. The won has lost more than 22 percent versus the dollar so far this
year, putting upward pressure on inflation.

Lee to push tripartite summit with Japan and China next week
SEOUL -- President Lee Myung-bak will push to hold three-way talks with the
leaders of Japan and China in Beijing next week on the sidelines of the
Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) to discuss closer regional cooperation in the face of
global financial unrest, Lee's top foreign policy advisor said Tuesday.
"Lee will seek to hold a tripartite meeting with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and
Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso to discuss closer financial policy cooperation
among the three countries," the advisor said in a meeting with reporters on
condition of anonymity.

Seoul education chief under fire over dubious campaign donations
SEOUL -- A wave of public criticism swept over Seoul's education chief on Tuesday
after he was found to have received questionable donations from school meal
agencies to fund his election campaign.
Kong Jeong-taek, the three-term superintendent of the Seoul Metropolitan Office
of Education, has fallen from grace in recent weeks after his campaign was found
to have been largely funded by sources ranging from school principals to private
institutes.

(3rd LD) S. Korea to heighten offense in World Cup qualifier against UAE
SEOUL -- South Korea's national football coach vowed Tuesday his team will make
all-out offensive efforts to defeat the United Arab Emirates in an upcoming Asian
World Cup qualifier in Seoul.
"We are at an important juncture ahead of the World Cup finals," Huh Jung-moo
told reporters at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, where South Korea will face the
UAE Wednesday evening as part of the final Asian qualifying round for the 2010
World Cup.

Korea launches 'Visit Korea 2010-2012' campaign
SEOUL -- South Korea on Tuesday declared 2010 to 2012 as the "Visit Korea" years,
seeking to attract 10 million foreign tourists and earn US$10 billion in foreign
currency tourism revenue in the first year of the nationwide campaign.
The "Visit Korea Campaign 2010-2012," the third such national promotion following
two previous campaigns in 1994 and 2001-2002, is also aimed at further upgrading
South Korea's status as a destination for international tourists and its national
brand, government officials said.
