NTB FORESTS IN CRITICAL CONDITION
Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Oct. 14 (ANTARA) - Some 159,343 hectares of forest area in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province are currently in critical condition due to illegal logging activities, according to NTB Governor Zainul Majdi.
NTB's forests cover a total area of 1,069,294 hectares or around 53 percent of the province's land territories, the NTB governor said in his written report read out by Eng. Ihyaulumuddin, head of the NTB provincial administrative and economic bureau here on Tuesday.
However, the forests were being degraded at a rate of 50,000 hectares annually, he said.
Therefore, the NTB administration was intensifying its forest and land rehabilitation efforts, especially in critical areas, he said.
The provincial authorities had also issued regulations to control and monitor deforestation. The NTB provincial administration was putting stress on the implementation of a sustainable development program in exploiting its natural resources, including forests, he said.
Some 368,619 hectares of NTB's land (outside forest area) were also in critical condition, he said.
Indonesia has a total forest area of more than 98 million hectares, or about 10 percent of the world's remaining tropical
forests. Indonesia's lowland tropical forests, the richest in timber resources and biodiversity including endangered fauna such as orangutan, are most at risk.
