WHIRLWIND DESTROYS 15 HOUSES IN BLITAR
Blitar, Oct 14 (ANTARA) - At least 15 houses at Bangsri village in Blitar district, East Java, were destroyed by a whirlwind which swept through the area on Monday night, Bangsri neighborhood unit head Suyanto said here on Tuesday.
He said there was no fatality but several trees were uprooted and roof tiles were dislodged as the whirlwind hit Blitar district after devastating neighboring Kediri district earlier.
As of Tuesday morning Bangsri villagers were seen clearing the ruins of destroyed houses and removing fallen trees which blocked the streets in the village.
Suyanto said heavy rain which was accompanied by strong wind that moved very fast in a spinning movement also left the Bangsri village in total blackout.
He had contacted local electricity company, PLN, to report that electricity lines in the village were snapped but it would take at least two days to have them repaired.
According to Suyanto, several houses in Kediri district were also destroyed by the whirlwind on Sunday but there was no report of casualty.
He said a gas station in Mejono village, Plemahan subdistrict in Kediri was heavily destroyed and traffic from Kediri to Pare and Kediri to Jombang was also disrupted by fallen trees.
