NEW REGULATIONS ISSUED TO SHORE UP FINANCIAL SECTOR

Indonesia has joined the worldwide effort to prevent prolonged fallout from the global credit crisis, which has toppled US and European banking giants, by expanding deposit guarantees and streamlining money flow to banks.

GOVT RESPONSIVE BY INCREASING DEPOSIT GUARANTEE OF UP TO RP2 BILLION

The Government has taken a quick and positive measure by issuing a government regulation in lieu of the law on deposit guarantee institution. Initially, the amount of guarantee is only Rp100 million, now is increased to Rp2 billion per depositor. It is expected that the guarantee could cover more than a half of banking total deposits.

The correction of the world economic growth projection has forced the government to revise the economic growth for next year. The 2009 economic growth assumption is revised from 6.3 percent to become 5.5 percent minimally and 6.1 percent maximally.
