DEFENSE MINISTER TO RUSSIA TO FOLLOW UP SUKHOI PURCHASE CONTRACT
Jakarta, Oct 13 (ANTARA) - Indonesian Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said here on Monday he planned to go to Russia to follow-up the purchase contract for six fighter jets for the country's air force.
"I will go to Russia to discuss improvement of cooperation in the military defense between the two countries," he said in reply to ANTARA after holding a closed-door meeting with Russian ambassador to Indonesia Alexander Ivanov at Hotel Shangrila here on Monday.
Juwono said the House of Representatives had already given a greenlight for immediate delivery of the Sukhoi planes to Indonesia. "The problem is it still takes three more weeks to realize it," he said.
The loan agreement for the purchase of the six fighter jets was signed by the finance ministry and Bank Natizis from France at the office of the coordinating minister for the economy on September 5, 2008.
The Russian Sukhoi maker on August 21, 2007 announced the sale of the six fighter jets to Indonesia worth US$300 million.
The planes including three SU-30 MK2s and SU-27 SKMs will complete the other six Sukhois that had been in the hands of the airforce since September 2003.
The signing of the memorandum of understanding for the purchase of the new six Sukhois was done at the opening of the Air Show in Moscow on August 21, 2007.
On credit from Russia worth US$1 billion for refurbishment and mondernization of the weapons systems of the Indonesian defense forces, Juwono said that he would keep coordinating with the Russian finance as well as defense ministers about it.
"There is no problem. Everything is discussed in a dialogue betweeen the two countries' ministers of finance and defense. What is clear is that there has been no problem," he said.
Indonesia and Russia has so far been seeking common perception with regard to the implementation of credit from Russia.
