WALHI: GOVT TO IMPROVE GARBAGE MANAGEMENT

Jakarta, Oct 13 (ANTARA) - To support it's ecosystem program in Jakarta, WALHI (Indonesian Forum for Environment) would hold an environmental meeting from October to December 2008, Slamet Daroyani, WALHI executive director, said here Monday.

"The eco-training would be followed by 25 people every month, so at the end of December the training sessions would have followed by 75 environmentalists. The participants may comprise students and members of the Karang Taruna yout organization," he said.

Apart from that, WALHI also planned a community based garbage management, consisting of garbage recycling initiators in Jakarta's sub-districts recently. These initiators have trained the public in garbage recycling.
Based on data of WALHI, Jakarta produces about 600 tons of garbage everyday, 80 percent is taken to the Bantar Gebang facility in Bekasi, 10 percent is managed by the community eco initiators and the other 10 percent are disposed into Jakarta's rivers everyday.

Those 10 percent garbage consists of 600 tons a day, which are dumped into the river, causing floods.
